Grupo VAPF, as a partner of the Spanish Committee for UNHCR, has made an extraordinary financial contribution to support people affected by the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the eastern province of Kunar and neighbouring regions of Afghanistan. The disaster claimed 2,200 lives, injured more than 3,600 people, and destroyed entire villages.
From the outset, UNHCR staff have been working to meet the population’s basic needs providing emergency shelters, non-food items, essential medical supplies, drinking water, emergency food assistance, and sanitation facilities.
Particular concern has been expressed for women and children affected by the earthquake, who are among the most at risk. Delivering assistance is especially challenging due to the shortage of female humanitarian workers able to respond to their specific needs.
This earthquake has brought further death and destruction to a country that has already endured over 40 years of conflict, natural disasters, chronic poverty, food insecurity, and the forced return of millions of Afghans from neighbouring countries.
