Boosting company contribution to sustainable development

Four years ago, the 193 member states of the United Nations General Assembly including Spain, unanimously approved Agenda 2030 with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Leaving no one behind” is the central concept of the agreement. The SDGs propose to end poverty and hunger, reducing inequalities and tackling urgent issues such as climate change.

In order to achieve this ambitious Agenda, it was agreed that everyone needed to participate including governments, business, civil society, and citizens from all over the world. Its strength comes from the universal nature of the agreement and the ambition of its 169 goals. Achieving them requires an unprecedented effort from all sectors of society and companies has a very important role to play in this. Achieving the SDGs requires a combination of momentum provided by the public sector, companies, investors, and civil society.

For the first time, the United Nations recognizes companies as key players in achieving its Global Objectives stating: “Private enterprise, investment, and innovation are the major drivers of productivity, inclusive economic growth, and job creation. We urge all companies to apply innovation and their creativity to solve problems related to sustainable development.”
