Within the field of university research, the viability of cultivating some palmaceae varieties (palm trees) is being examined.
This viable project opens a great many doors to alleviate the crisis that the agricultural sector is currently experiencing. Orihuela Higher Polytechnic College has confirmed the success of the first experiments on production of bio-fuel.
Bio-fuel comes in two main types: biodiesel to replace diesel, and bioethanol to replace petrol.
By 2006, Spain already had a dozen biodiesel production plants and twenty more in the pipeline.
